The relationship between economic growth and environmental pollution hasalways been the important aspect of environmental economics. Economic growth inChina has experienced more than30years of sustained high growth, but theconflict in the dilemma between economic growth and environmental degradation hascaused people to attach great importance to the discussion of the relations. With the environmental monitoring technology developing in the20th century, people can get a lot of actual data on environmental.Scholars have begun to usethese data to analyze the relationship between environmental pollution andeconomic growth. Environmental kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis is one of suchresearch, which think that the environmental quality of a country or a region willget worse and then better with the developing of the economic, displayed on thegraphics is an inverted "U" shape. But China has a vast area, there are significant differences in the eastern, central and western region, such as the resources endowment, industrial structure, environmental protection policy and science and technology level. And there is afeedback between economic growth and environmental quality, therefore this articleattempts to introduce environmental factors to the output function, establishingsimultaneous equations between the EKC and expanded output function, as a toolto examine the relationship between economic growth and environmental pollutionin China’s eastern, central and western regions. This thesis is divided into five parts, the first chapter is introduction.Thischapter firstly shows background and significance of the selected topic, and thenreviews the economists’ study on this area. The second chapter will introduce theconcepts and economic theory used in this paper. Theory elaborated the externalitytheory, property theorem, public goods theory and the environmental kuznetstheory. With this theory,we attempt to establish simultaneous equations of the EKCand expanded output equation. The third chapter is the status analysis of theeconomic growth and environmental quality in the eastern, central and westernregions. In this section, we will use a large amount of data and charts to analysisthe regional economic growth, industrial structure, technology, material and human capital, and environmental pollution. The fourth chapter is the empiricalanalysis. We choose the data from1995to2010on wastewater emissions, sulfurdioxide emissions, solid waste emissions, industrial soot and dust emissions toanalysis the regional characteristic of relationship between the environmentalpollution and economic growth. Research has shown that environmental pollution willget better and worse then better with the economic growth in eastern, centraland western regions, displaying a "N" relationship. The high proportion of grossindustrial production in the GDP will promote the environmentaldegradation.Environmental pollution will reduce the level of output. Material andhuman will improve the level of output. The last part is the Summary on the researchand policy recommendation. This chapter summarizes the study of the previoussection, and gives some advice on these problems.
