Big Five Personality Inventory (IPIP-BFAS) Amendments

Personality measure is an important component of psychological measurement, which has important significance for a more comprehensive and accurate understanding of a person’s personality traits, for teaching in accordance with student’s aptitude, and for personnel selection and appointment.The revised IPIP-BFAS (the Big Five Aspect Scales) in my study which originated from the International Personality Item Pool has a total of100items, with the advantages of non-copyright restrictions. IPIP-BFAS Chinese verson scale was eventually formed after translation and two revisions, with13items deleted. Then1000college students in seven universities from the southern Jiangsu, central Jiangsu, and northern Jiangsu in Jiangsu Province were measured by this scale. Reliability and validity of the scale was tested on the basis of the effective data of the sample, and gender norm and professional norm in Jiangsu Province were also established. The specific findings are as follows:1. Scale. IPIP-BFAS Chinese Edition was divided into five dimensions:neuroticism, agreeableness, conscientiousness, extraversion, openness/intellect;10facets:volatility, withdrawal, compassion, politeness, industriousness, orderliness, enthusiasm, assertiveness, intelligence and openness, with a total of87items, and with each item5point scoring.2. Reliability analysis. The overall coefficient of internal alpha consistency of IPIP-BFAS Chinese version was0.856, it’s coefficient of internal alpha consistency of5dimensions was in the range of0.739～0.890, and coefficient of internal alpha consistency of10facets was in the range of0.583～0.847. The test-retest reliability of5dimensions was in the range of0.876～0.991, and the test-retest reliability of10aspects was in the range of0.839～0.990after two weeks.3. Validity analysis(1) Construct validity:it included the correlation between every dimension, exploratory factor analysis and congruent validity. the correlation between every dimension was in the range of0.216～0.571; results on facet item plus analysis showed that the KMO was0.761, Bartlett’s test of sphericity reached a significant level, five factors explained82.773%of the total variance, and the facets contained in every factor was consistent with the structure of the original English scale; the results of congruent validity analysis with the the BFI Chinese version showed the correlation coefficients of the5dimensions were in the range of0.461～0.848, with a high degree of correlation.(2) Criterion related validity:the correlation of the scale self-assessment and peer assessment showed the correlation of the five dimensions was in the range of0.669～0.767; correlation of conscientiousness dimension and the CET-4achievement was0.574; the correlation of neuroticism dimension and dimensions of extraversion of IPIP-BFAS with EPQ N (neuroticism) and E (extraversion) dimension were respectively0.737and0.793, which were significant. The results showed that the criterion related validity of IPIP-BFAS Chinese Edition was good.4. College students’ gender norm and major norm in Jiangsu Province were established.
