Wassily Kandinsky and Pieter Mondrian are two representative abstract painters in the twentieth century. They have greatly promoted the formation and development of abstract art, tremendously shaping the artistic concepts and the ways to appreciate art. There are many similarities in their abstract expression of the art; meanwhile, there are some differences in their respective pursuit of aesthetics and specific creation of art. Kandinsky is extremely free and boundless and is thus referred to as "hot abstract"; Mondrian is highly tolerant and restraint, and is thus called "cold abstract". The formations and developments of their artistic styles as well as the characteristics of their artistic language are highly comparable. That’s why this paper investigates into this perspective to study their different development tracks, similarities and differences in their aesthetics and artistic language under the influence of modern art and modern culture, aiming to gain a better insight into their artistic concepts and ideals. Based on this comparative study, we can better realize the soul of abstract art and deepen our aesthetic experience of modern art.
