In recent years, there are a great many of academic papers and monographs which mainly discussed the Buddhist faith of the emperors in Qing dynasty, such as imperial robe and cassock wrote by Prof. Luo Wenhua of Palace Museum and under the starry sky of Qianlong--the spiritual ideals of Qianlong wrote by Prof. Wang Zilin of Palace Museum. However, there is much less study on the Buddhist faith of empress dowagers who once lived in the Cining Palace.According to the fact, a set of Buddhist relics was once placed in the worshipping hall of the Cining Palace and then transferred to the White Horse Temple and Luoyang Museum for some reason. In this paper, based on the detailed analyses to this set of Buddhist relics from the religious and artistic views, the archives of Palace Museum of Qing dynasty and the architecture of the worshipping hall, the author attempts to know how this set of Buddhist relics was placed in the worshipping hall in Ming and Qing dynasties, and then talks about the lives and the Buddhist faith of the women who lived in this mysterious Cining Palace.The paper consists of four parts.In the first part, this paper mainly makes the history of the Cining Palace located in Palace Museum and the worshipping hall inside it clear. At the same time, this part also discusses how the set of Buddhist relics originally placed in the worshipping hall of the Cining Palace was transfered to Luoyang from Beijing.In the second part, from the iconographic and stylistic views, this paper mainly makes a detailed study on the set of Buddhist relics which are now separately collected by the White Horse Temple of Luoyang, Luoyang Museum and the Folk Museum of Luoyang.In the third part, according to the resources, the archives and the architecture of the worshipping hall, this paper mainly discusses several issues related to the set of Buddhist relics. Firstly, this part mainly discusses the origin of the24statues of the White Horse Temple which originally belonged to the Nengren Temple of Beijing.Secondly, this part talks about the origin of the Buddhism relics placed in the worshipping hall. Thirdly, this part pays attention to the Buddhist theme and displaying of the worshipping hall.In the fourth part, this paper focuses on the changes of the Buddhist relics’connotation due to the circumstance transition, and then deeply illuminates that cultural relics’transference has a huge influence on the compilation of Chinese fine art history.In this paper, based on the detailed analyses to the set of Buddhist relics originally placed in the worshipping hall of the Cining Palace and the architectural space of the worshipping hall, the author mainly talks about the Buddhist faith of the empress dowagers in Ming and Qing dynasties. To a certain extent, this study is very helpful to the in-depth study on the Buddhist faith of the empress dowagers in Ming and Qing dynasties. It is also very important to make the royal Buddhist faith during Ming and Qing dynasties and the cultural exchanges and blending between Manchu, Mongolian and Han-Chinese clear. And it also can promote the studies of the related fields.
