With the worldwide promotion of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (TCSOL), the influence of Chinese language has become greater and greater. So teaching, teacher and teaching material has become a focus. Teaching material is the material on which teachers and students rely, and teaching content is composed of teaching material, teaching plan and teaching syllabus. During the teaching activity, teaching material plays an important role. However, there are many problems in teaching material of TCSOL, such as drill design in teaching material.Since my undergraduate major is English, I am very familiar with teaching material of English and I find out the distinct characteristics of drill design in teaching materials of English. Therefore, I choose drill parts of research target A Go for It and target B New Practical Chinese Reader as my research targets. I hope that through contrastive analysis on these two teaching materials, we can get some enlightenment on drill design of Chinese teaching materials.Before the data collected, I firstly read a lot of references and related theories; secondly, according to previous researchers, I divided drills into three types:controlled drill, transitional drill and communicational drill; thirdly, I define the three types severally in order to give clear definition of these three types of drills.The paper mainly adopts quantitative research and qualitative research methods. Firstly, I collect the information of drills of two sets of textbooks and establish EXCEL database; and then mark three types of drills by using different numbers and finally get the data of two sets of textbooks; besides, the collected data of research target A and target B will be analyzed and contrastive analysis between three types of drills of the two textbooks will also be carried out; finally, through teaching theory and drill principle, some enlightenments for teaching materials of TCSOL will be concluded.The research result suggests that there are obvious differences between the drills of two kinds of textbooks. From the aspect of controlled drill, the proportion of two textbooks is basically the same, but there is no mechanical-type drill; the proportion of transitional in New Practical Chinese Reader is higher than that in Go for It, the proportion of communicational in Go for It is obviously higher than that in New Practical Chinese Reader, and in Go for It, the communicational drills mainly belong to task-based communicational drills. There are some other drill types that decided by the teacher’s solving method. That means there are some differences between static observation and practice in real class.Through research, it can be concluded that there are a lot of advantages in drill design of Go for It. This textbook emphasizes communicational principle, discourse input and output and team spirit of students. All advantages reflect the good points of teaching materials of English.
