Euphemism is a common phenomenon in language in all nationallanguages in the world, it is also the focus of attention of the linguists.Different social and historical background and cultural atmosphere canproduce different euphemisms. There are many euphemisms in Chineseand English. By comparing and analyzing Chinese and Englisheuphemism, we can know the similarity and difference among the values,national psychology and the social and historical background between thetwo countries, it also has important guiding significance to foreignlanguage teaching and cross-cultural communication.This paper is a comparative study of the two languages of thelinguistic features of euphemism, we hope it can provide a more in-depthunderstanding of Chinese and English euphemism and raise theawareness of differences between native culture and target culturelearning. Based on the comparative analysis of the two languages andculture, this paper puts forward some effective teaching methods andstrategies, and suggestions for the accurate interpretation and applicationof euphemism in cross-cultural communication. This paper is divided intofive parts:The introduction part mainly introduces the origin, the meaning ofthe topic and research related to this topic; The second part makes a detailed comparison of Chinese andEnglish euphemism, we analyze the similarities of Chinese and Englisheuphemism from four aspects, origin, use scope, pragmatic effect and thelanguage characteristics. Then we analyze the differences betweenChinese and English euphemism from five aspects, construction method,moral values, religious beliefs, psychological characteristics and socialbackground.The third part introduces the teaching and learning of Chineseeuphemism in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Firstly, it pointsout the status and function of euphemism teaching in teaching Chinese asa foreign language, and then analyzes the present situation and defects ofChinese euphemism teaching;The fourth part summarizes the inspiration of Chinese euphemismteaching in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. Including theenlightenment to Chinese textbook writing, the enlightenment toclassroom teaching and learners’ acquisition;The last part is the conclusion, points out the innovation anddeficiency of this paper.
