On The Works Of George Orwell Humanitarian Ideas

George Orwell was once called generation solemn conscience by V.S. Pritchett,the most famous British short story writer and critic of20th century. When the faith generally collapsed in the20th century,when the world was full of the hollow Man, Orwell gave keen attention to the suffering of society with his virtuous soul, reflecting an intellectual conscience. He personally experienced the social gap between the rich and the poor, and expressed deep sympathy for the lower classes and the proletarians in his works. Especially in his last two works, Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four. He exposed the harm caused by totalitarian with extremely heavy feelings, and expressed deep concerns about the plight of the human. It is his integrity strength of character and attitude writing for justice help him win the worldwide fame, as well as appreciationed by the whole national researchers.Throughout the study at home and abroad, Orwell research is mainly reflected in four aspects:biography, Political Perspective, artistic level, the cultural level research. Although the research is fruitful, there are still a number of shortcomings:First, most of the research focused on the work of anti-totalitarian and anti-utopian theme, some researchers applied the new theory to explain the works of Orwell. However, due to the neglect of the historical context they can not correctly grasp the overall idea of Orwell, the interpretation of the text into a game theory drill; Second, the interpretation of Orwell’s most important two novels animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four is not read carefully enough by the Previous researchers, the humanitarian spirit of Orwell’s novel has not been fully excavated. Because of this, on the basis of previous studies, I tried to analysis the two novels as a corroboration together with Orwell’s letters, essays,reviews, and Orwell’s previous works, in order to grasp Orwell’s humanitarian spirit. In this paper, close reading is the main method, It Highlights the humanitarian spirit of Orwell’s works,which were deeply excavated, then leads to the conclusion:Orwell’s humanitarian spirit is to expose and criticize the totalitarian political and express an intellectual conscience to defend human dignity. The specific content is discussed from the following five parts:The introduction part introduces the research object, and summarizes the research status at home and abroad of the works of Orwell. Thus put forward basis and innovation in this paper;The first chapter discusses the the humanitarian ideological reasons for the formation Orwell’s works. I briefly combed the evolution of humanitarian thought in the West, then specifically discussed the reason why his humanitarian can form from the impact of the European humanist tradition and Orwell’s life experience;The second chapter is the main part of the paper,which focuses on a concrete manifestation of Orwell’s works humanitarian ideas. I believe that, Orwell humanitarian thinking mainly reflected in two aspects:the thinking on poverty and to expose and criticize the totalitarian. When discussed Orwell’s poverty thinking, I first points out that the three kinds of poverty under the pen of Orwell, which reveal the vagrants and beggars attention, reproduction of the working class, the miserable life of the material and spiritual double poverty; followed by analysis of the causes of poverty; finally, I points out Orwell’s concern about poor theme is the British literary tradition. In the discussion of the critique of totalitarianism and expose section, the author first discusses the course of development of Orwell’s anti-totalitarian thought, then specifically discusses the harm and destruction of the totalitarianism of human nature from the three aspects:the natural emotions imprisonment, the control of the right to speak, discipline to control the human soul. Finally I make a simple comparison with the other two Anti-Utopia novels, and pointed out that the unique nature of Orwell’s anti-totalitarian.The third part is the significance of the of Orwell humanitarian thought, it is both sublimation and deepening of the first two parts, is the main innovation of this paper, the natural focus. Different from former researchers, the author start from the point of view of desperate hope, Orwell’s works convey the spirit of not completely pessimism and despair, but there is still hope in the desperate world. I focus on the boxer in Animal Farm and Winston in Nineteen Eighty-Four, which pointed out the faint glimmer of hope in the Orwellian creation, and pointed out that these two the meaning of the images-they described as Camus Sisyphus, although efforts are in vain, there is a strong sense of tragedy, and this is the tragedy of the whole human spirit of A generation of intellectuals solemn conscience, A generation of intellectuals in his conscience section, the author thinks Orwell concerned with the underlying spirit and dignity of the people is great, this paper discusses Orwell as a honest intellectuals in the social context of totalitarianism and dictatorship, how special he stands alone, adheres to himself. His anti-war stance, his enthusiasm in social change, he told the truth that others dare not tell, his keen insight into the future, allows us to appreciate him as a humanist with conscience and courage.The concluding sectionis the summary of the full text.
