Chinese ink painting is a unique artistic form that lies in tools such as softbrushes and rice paper. It is developed based on Asian philosophy and culturalbackground since thousand years ago. It forms into a style of implicit andrestraint, fresh and elegant. It has unique value of historical heritage andintegrity. In the contemporary period, Western painting thoughts and techniquehas a considerable impact on traditional Chinese ink painting in China.Particularly in recent years, with the constant development and the exchangeof information in global politics, economics, culture, and technology; changesin the global art community is increasing. Hence, Chinese ink artists must beprepared to cope with any new problems and changes.Due to the specificity of Chinese ink art form and technique; it is a newtopic that brings out to our new generation, which is that how to preservehistorical tradition of ink art and develop contemporary ink art in the globalcontext.Take the modern ink figurative painting that developed from the BeihongXu and Zhaohe Jiang Chinese painting system as an example, problems willbe that, such as how to balance our artistic practices between traditional andcontemporary ink art.The thesis explores the topic ‘what is Chinese ink painting tradition.’ Itdiscusses what is the status in both western and eastern art world. It alsoreveals the difference and connections between eastern and western historicalart spirits, and between Chinese painting tradition and contemporaneity. Inconclusion, there need not be contradictions between development andtradition in Chinese ink art. In fact, figurative ink painting is a practicalcombination of the traditional and present-day Chinese painting spirits...
