China is one of the birth lands of advertisement. During the period of pre-Qin Dynasty, with the development of merchant-changing, advertisements in words, objects and marks began to appear. After thousands years of advancement, ads are increasingly abundant in form and content. A different form of ads with outstanding Chinese characteristics, such as brand in wood and cloth, voice, pamphlet and couplet, has been emerging, which can be easily perceived everywhere today.Ming and Qing Dynasty was the peak in which Chinese traditional merchant ads were unprecedented advanced and Ming Dynasty was the transitional stage of merchant ads. This paper tries to probe in the several main sorts of ads to learn the overall level of them. We can acknowledge the reason of the development of ads through searching the macro-economy, lives and ideas of citizens, the modes of management in Ming Dynasty.This paper is divided into three chapters:In chapter one, I’d like to introduce the level of merchant ads in pre-Ming period, which can be divided in pre-Qin, Wei, Jin, South and North Dynasty, Sui and Tang Dynasty and Song and Yuan Dynasty, and describe the tendency of the development of ads.In chapter two, I’d like to classify merchant ads in Ming into four kinds and each kind can be divided into several small sorts furthermore, such as board, ban, crying, chanting, poem, couplet, book, picture, anti-counterfeit trademark and so on. Based on distinct records on ads’ forms in historical materials about Ming, I will illustrate the level of ads’ creativity and effect.In chapter three, I will analyze from two aspects, macro-environment of advertising and micro-advertising environment. Micro views contain four items—the urban industrial and commercial development, the expansion of the citizen, prosperity of public cultural, public attitude to merchants. Microscopic point contain five items, business mode, the swelling of shops, the level of management and advertising creativity.I outline the reasons of the Ming Dynasty advertising development.
