Although Chinese idioms are one of habitually used and expressive idiomatic phrase, they are usually neglected in the field of teaching Chinese as a second language(TCSL). Also Chinese idioms are the difficult part for foreign students. Therefore this article analysises the characteristics of Chinese idioms. Besides article makes a list of Chinese idioms in the syllabuses and the teaching materials for foreign students at intermediate and advanced Chinese level. Then this article makes an investigation and a test on Chinese idioms acquisition of foreign students at intermediate and advanced Chinese level, and analysises the result of the research. In the end of this article, the author makes some teaching suggestion, which includes the syllabuses,the teaching materials and the class teaching.This article are divided into five chapters:Chapter 1:In this chapter, introduces the meaning of the article, the achievements of predecessors, then provides the purpose of article and method of the study.Chapter 2:In this chapter, defines and describes the characteristics of Chinese idioms in the syntax, semantics, pragmatics and culture.Chapter 3:In this chapter, collects the 57 Chinese idioms from the 4 syllabuses of TCSL and 299 Chinese idioms from 32 intermediate and advanced teaching materials of TCSL. The article appraises the 299 Chinese idioms from different aspects such as the syllabuses, different courses, choose standard of the teaching materials and characteristics. This chapter draws a conclusion:firstly, this is no clear standard for Chinese idioms at intermediate and advanced Chinese level in the syllabuses and the teaching materials. secondly, the teaching materials choose the Chinese idioms by context arrangement. And also there is no close connection between the syllabuses and the teaching materials.Chapter 4:In this chapter, questionnaire is designed for Chinese idioms acquisition of intermediate students and advanced students.68 foreign students are divided into three groups:the students in first group are influenced by Chinese culture, the students in second group are influenced by western culture, the third group is ethnic Chinese. The questionnaire is divided into two parts. The first part is subject evaluation on Chinese idioms acquisition situation and the second part is object examination about Chinese idioms. By the questionnaire, the article deeply analysises acquisition situation of foreign students. This chapter draws a conclusion:in the research, the result of the first group and the ethnic Chinese students are better than the second group which is influenced by western culture. Because the Chinese ethnic students and the first group students have an advantage on culture, their performance is relative better than western students.Chapter5:In this chapter, reference on the syllabuses, the teaching materials and the questionnaire, the author provides some suggestions for the syllabuses, intermediate and advanced teaching materials and Chinese idioms teaching.
