Hu Yaobang’s political ideology was notable for the Chinese social democracyand socialist society construction. Combining Marxism with social reality, Hu madesincere efforts in the development of modern Chinese society, a socialist state knownas “Socialism with Chinese characteristics”.In this thesis, Hu’s political theories about social democracy are demonstrated,from their origins to detailed components, and these political views impactsignificantly in Chinese economic development and socialist reorganization.Generally, Hu’s points in social democracy are considered as an evolution of Marxismand Capitalism. It views democracy into three categories: civil liberties, communistparty democracy, and freedom of information and technology, all of which provideguidance to the construction of a better socialist society. This thesis addresses politicalphilosophy of Hu Yaobang in four chapters.Chapter one aims to provide a general framework of this work. Firstly, the basicprinciples of social democracy and the importance of studying Hu Yaobang’s theoryare introduced. Then, we illustrate the efforts had been made in understanding HuYaobang’s theory and outline our views on the prospects for further development inthis area.Chapter two considers the origin of Hu Yaobang’s ideology. On one hand, Hucarried the advanced part of capitalism to China. He takes over John Locke andJean-Jacques Rousseau’s philosophy, and expends it to Chinese capitalism revolution.On the other hand, Hu’s ideology is a combination of Marxism, Maoism (MaoZedong Thought), and social reality, which is known as “Socialism with Chinesecharacteristics”.Chapter three provides a comprehensive assessment of Hu Yaobang’s philosophyin three categories: civil liberties, communist party democracy, and freedom ofinformation and technology. In civil liberties, in order to preserve China as a politicalentity, he favors to write people’s freedom into laws. In communist party democracy, he is against feudalism and idolization. In the freedom of information and technology,he teaches people the right opinion of technology.Chapter four focus on current merits of Hu Yaobang’s philosophy. Firstly, Hu’sthoughts in social democracy are considered as an fashion-forward evolution, whichenriches fundamental theories in the development of modern China society. Inaddition, his political views impact significantly in Chinese economic developmentand socialist reorganization. Studying Hu’s philosophy could promote our society tobe a more liberal, powerful, and functional socialism. Therefore, the intelligencepresented in Hu’s theory of democracy should be closely followed.Moreover, his philosophy could promote our society to be a more liberal,powerful, and functional socialism.
