William· Appleman·Williams is renowned for American diplomatichistoriography. He is not only a representative of "New Left School" but also afounder and leader of "Wisconsin School". He showed his unique charm in theAmerican diplomatic historiography, but few of people researched his diplomatichistoriography. The paper would systematically demonstrate his work to show itsessence.Social environment impacted Williams’s Diplomatic historiography: Americansociety changes in the mid-20th century, the American New Left movement in the20th century, the drawbacks of traditional American history, which provided afavorable environment for his research. Williams’s Diplomatic Historiography haddeep academic roots which include early education and the help of his teacher. Theseall contribute to the formation of his Diplomatic Historiography.Williams’s Diplomatic Historiography could be summarized in three aspects. Theunderstanding of the nature of American’s foreign policy, American’s foreign policywere a tragedy, Summary American diplomacy’s improvement programs. In fact, thenature of American’s foreign policy was a policy of expanding the nature ofimperialism. Williams was not optimistic about American’s foreign policy. Suchpolicy would be hindered the development of the United States, it also be damaged tothe interests of the American people. After analyzing American’s foreign policies, healso planed to the future of the American. He urged the American’s government toabandon such diplomatic thinking and they should concentrate on the American inorder to create a peaceful coexistence and equality as well as freedom community.Williams has made significant contribution to diplomatic history. His uniqueanalysis on American foreign and the vision of the future society were a great attempt.He was known as "the father of revisionism." His ideas were influenced by the NewLeft, and in turn his ideas also provided the theoretical support for the New Left. Hisstudying of Diplomatic Historiography provide a newly idea to other scholars.In short, Williams had rich historic imagination and dedicated to diplomatichistory spirit which impacted on future generations. So Williams’s DiplomaticHistoriography ought to be gotten more academic attention and research.
