With the rapid development of the global economy, English as an international language is playing an increasingly active and important role in international contacts, thus the significance of English language courses in school education has become prominent. And senior middle school English education, as the start of the concurrently foundation stage in the entire English education stage, is of great importance.Teaching English reading at the high school level strives to improve advanced reading proficiency as well as basic reading skills. The use of a problem-solving model is one way to provide students with an organized approach to comprehending, investigating, and resolving problem statements. Concretely speaking, in the procedure of learning the new English curriculum, students in the experimental class first felt the problem situation and raised problems, then analyzed the problems and carried out inquiry, and at last they solved the problem and undertook meaning construction. During the experiment, the author adopted a series of methods to acquire the first-hand data, such as interview, questionnaire, test and soon. At the end of the experiment, the data were collected and analyzed carefully. The study tries to solve the following problems:1. Students can improve their interest in reading English by the model of problem-solving.2. Students can improve their reading ability by the model of problem-solvingIn the study the subjects were the students in Class7and Class20of Baotou Beizhong NO.3Middle School. Class20was the experimental class and Class7was the control class. The total number in each class was60.Their English achievements were nearly the same. The students in the experimental class had reading lesson by model of problem-solving, while the students in the control class had reading lesson with traditional ways. After18weeks, the researcher tested two classes on their reading ability. In the study, the author employed tests, questionnaire and interviews to collect data.The study has had the following findings:The application of the model of problem-solving in teaching reading can improve the reading interest and ability. The achievement of the subjects who had reading lesson by mode of problem-solving was better than those who do with traditional ways. In addition, Through this process students’self-confidence grows and interest in achievement develops. As a result, reading and critical thinking proficiencies are practiced and enhanced.
