Situation and Policy is a course serving as a main channel to instruct our students ideologically and morally. Taking this course can help the students foster a right outlook on the world, life and values, build a sound personality, cultivate a strong sense of responsibility and good morality, as well as form proper behaviors. However, problems of various kinds may occur when it comes to real practice, which might limit the physical and mental development of students studying in engineering colleges. Scholars at home and abroad have conducted intensive researches on the actual effect of the course from different perspectives, and a lot of important results have been generated thusly. Based on former researches, this Paper intends to focus on the ramifications of the actual effect of this course by employing the method of combining theory with practice and taking the characteristics of the engineering college and the status quo of the engineering students into consideration. Building on analyses of the problems in achieving actual effect of the Situation and Policy course, the Paper explored the reasons behind those problems. Taking the reasons into account and based on the experience and lessons drawn from the author’s own practice as a teacher on this course, this Paper proposes some creative strategies to enhance the actual effect of the Situation and Policy course for engineering colleges.The Paper falls into the following three parts:The first part is devoted to the ramifications of the actual effect of the Situation and Policy course in engineering colleges. This course plays a facilitating role in helping engineering students foster a right outlook on the world, life and values, improve their ideological and theoretical level and upgrade their knowledge structure. In real practice, the effect of this course lies in the improvement of the internal ideological awareness of the students and the encouragement for the students to take real action. The author also elaborates on the significance of enhancing the actual effect of this course from perspectives like sticking to the socialist way of running engineering colleges, lifting the ideological and political quality of the engineering students, and promoting the development of the Situation and Policy course under the new situation.The second part is committed to the manifestations of the unsatisfactory effect of the Situation and Policy course in engineering colleges. Currently, the problems for this course are mainly presented as follows:the teaching content is not deep enough, the teaching method is outmoded and single, and the students find it hard to digest the lessons. This part also analyzes the reasons for those undesirable effects from the point views such as the value recognition, positioning and management of the course, the status quo of the faculty and the political quality of the engineering students.In the third part, countermeasures were put forward to enhance the actual effect of the Situation and Policy course in engineering colleges:first, reform teaching methods so as to combine the teaching of lecturers with independent learning of the students, theoretical teaching with practices, traditional media with modern media; second, plan reasonably by exploring teaching materials that are suitable for engineering colleges, finding teaching content that is closely related with current events and standardizing the teaching system; third, enhance the building of the faculty team, rationalize the structure of the team, strengthen the training of the team so as to build up high-quality and reasonably structured teaching staff with strong innovative abilities and great academic strength; fourth, improve evaluation standards by combining cognitive evaluation with recognitory evaluation, final examination with process evaluation, and establish a flexible evaluation method with the participation from both the teachers and students.
