Shanghai has urbanized since1980s. It is one of the earliest areas. Shanghaisdevelopment is inseparable from rural migrant workers. According to the data onMay21,2012, Shanghai currently has a permanent population of9.3536million.Most of them are migrant workers and their family. A large number of children ofmigrant workers follow their parents into Shanghai and study in the schools in thiscity. Some grow up in Shanghai, some turn to the local school from their hometown.Their parents are not well educated and at the same time they have a bad living andlearning environment. All these may cause their poor learning basis and study habits.Especially their English scores are much poor than the other subjects. This situationhas not only caused the attention of English teachers, also the attention of the schoolleaders. In order to improve English scores, advance the quality of English teachingEnglish and help these children change the serious lag as soon as possible, the authorconducts the research in the author’s school.The literature shows that the learning needs of children of migrant workers onthe English learning first appeared in the1920s in India. It didn’t appear in the laterfifty years until the1970s. Demand analysis begins to be applied to general Englishteaching. And it becomes an indispensable step in a foreign language course design.Through the study of literature, theoretical knowledge and practical operation,the author realizes learning needs is the starting point of the English teaching. Ifteachers understand the students English learning needs, they can chooseappropriate teaching content, then take the right teaching strategy and really teachstudents in accordance with their aptitude.From the research, we know that English learning difficulties are caused byfamily conditions, weak home teaching foundation, study habits, psychologicalobstacles, and so on. Through the method of questionnaire, interviews and testingmethod, the author know that the original English teaching cannot meet theirEnglish learning needs due to the bad family conditions, the weak home teaching foundation and the incorrect study habits. According to the results of the survey,although teachers try their best to complete the teaching task with the curriculumstandard and the requirements of the teaching material in the teaching process, theresult is not pleasant.However, to our surprise, as long as teachers change teaching strategy, thesestudents will be able to improve the teaching effectiveness. The author in the processof research has also used the Excel and SPSS software in descriptive analysis,independent sample t-test and correlation analysis to ensure the accuracy of dataand scientificalness.So it is thus clear that correct localization of teaching starting point andreasonable compensation strategy can improve the students English achievement.Based on empirical research, this paper put forward compensation strategies ofEnglish learning needs from the teaching target, teaching content, teachingevaluation and study emotion.In short, the author hopes this study can help these migrant workers childrenenter the city life and be a member of the society in the near future. At the sametime, the author hopes this research can also help solve the confusion of teachingfrom English teachers. |
