Compositions of college entrance examination has received great attention of the public, while recent researches usually analyzed it as a certain kind of test rather than interpreting it in the view of sociology. Taking compositions of college entrance examination in China from1951to2012as research object, in the view of sociology of knowledge, this research tried to find its value orientations and how students were involved in it, then to reveal the mechanism of how nation control it. Besides, to perfect the management and promote the cultivation of students’character, how to improve the content and its presentation of compositions of college entrance examination was also discussed.With the aid of the analytical frameworks of other texts, especially the analytical framework of the text book, the study constructs the analytical framework of compositions of college entrance exam, then analyses the value orientation of it and how the orientation was internalized by students. This research mainly applies method of content analysis and comparison. Composition texts were analyzed both in quality and quantity. A comparison of value orientation orders has been made between excellent compositions and unique onesThe research showed that value orientations of compositions of college entrance exams can be divided into individual values, social ones and environment. Individual values consisting of adaption has always been favored and the proportion of transcending has been improved since90s; social values are featured by controlling and the awareness of consultation has just appeared; and environment value becomes more popular. From the current condition, we can see some progress in compositions of college entrance exams, that is, under the control of the nation, a more diverse and universal value orientation is getting more attention,whether consciously or unconsciously. The research points out that except.for controlling, compositions of college entrance exams should pay more attention to students’ character cultivation, focusing on both regulation and freedom of mind. Compositions of college entrance examination’s value orientations needed to broaden its horizon in content, and be more open and flexible in presentation. Only by this can compositions of college entrance examination work better in leading, promoting and educating students’ development.
