With the development of curriculum reform of basic Education, English teaching focuses more on cultivating students’ integrative use of language. As a necessary component of classroom instruction, English homework is a combination of teaching and learning. However, traditional assignment can not adapt to the curriculum reform and should be paid much attention to in TEFL.To make a thorough study for English homework design, the author reviews a mass of literatures on the topic at home and abroad, summarizes the gap between theoretical studies and teaching practice, proposes some teaching theories, provides abundant case studies in accordance with the new homework design ideas, purposes and principles, and establishes a student-centered system in homework design, so as to help students form active strategies and attitudes towards learning. Study shows that the effective design of homework is student-centred, and it can raise students’motivation and interest, develop their personality, improve their thinking ability, and help their integrative use of language.
