The extension of Chinese language is the equivalent of life. Extracurricular reading is the important component for Chinese learning. The effect of extracurricular reading cannot be replaced by perfect textbook. It is helpful for improving the reading level and literary attainment of students to moderately carry out extracurricular reading. The "New Curriculum Standard" emphasizes the concepts that’do less exercises, read more books, love to read books, read good books and read the whole book’. Simultaneously, it is very complicated to effectively carry on the extracurricular reading because of the traditional education institutional, the existing teaching mode, the diversified reading form, the abundant content and a large amount of information. Therefore, this paper has investigated and analyzed the current situation of extracurricular reading of the middle school students (including the junior high school and the high school) in Shenzhen city and Changchun city to find the countermeasure by the forms of questionnaire investigation.In this article, the current situation of extracurricular reading in Shenzhen city and Changchun city represents the present status in developed area and less developed area, respectively. The paper contains three parts. The first part includes main point, research background, feasibility, significance, and research method. The second part is the main content of this questionnaire which contains four elements:1. the analysis and comparison of the passion for reading, the number of books and the reading time between the middle students of two cities;2. the analysis and comparison of the reading detail between the middle students of two cities;3. the analysis and comparison of the teachers’ and parents’ attitude to the extracurricular reading between the middle students of two cities;4. the influencing factors of extracurricular reading in two cities. The third part primarily analyses the relevant issues and corresponding countermeasures. This part points out the existing problems and the hidden trouble in Shenzhen city and Changchun city. Furthermore, the reasonable suggestions about how to implement the activities of reading for the education sector, schools, families, individual student are provided.
