In recent decades, geographic information technology has penetrated deeply into allkinds of fields of social production as well as social life with the continuous development andwide application of geographic information technology, which especially plays anunparalleled part in solving the increasingly prominent problems of environment, resources,population issues and the implementation of sustainable development. Meanwhile geographicinformation technology is not only an important sign of maturity of modern geography, butgeography major research methods and means. Furthermore, Geography is one of the onlysubjects which studies the relationship of human beings, environment and sustainabledevelopment in the high school, The application of GIS technology in high school geographyteaching can improve the quality of geography teaching, inspire the students’ interest inlearning, be of benefit to cultivate students attitudes and values, and be more conducive tostudents who need to adapt to the future information society. Therefore, it is imperative toapply the geographic information technologies to the high school geography teaching.The study focuses on the applications of Geographic information technology in highschool geography teaching and expounds from four aspects: the macro level of geographicinformation technology education, the necessity of application of geographic informationtechnology in the teaching of high school geography, specific cases of teaching and theimpact on high school geography teaching.The paper can be divided into four parts: the first part discusses the concepts ofgeographic information technology and the studies of geographic information technologyapplication in the teaching of high school geography both at home and abroad; the second partintroduces the necessity and feasibility of the application of geographic informationtechnology in the teaching of high school geography; the third part describes the examples ofteaching with application of geographic information technologies in the teaching of highschool geography; the fourth part focuses on the influence which was brought forth by theapplication of geographic information technology in the teaching of high school geographyfrom both students and teachers.
