An Empirical Study On Gender Capability Based On WVS

The human’s ultimate purpose of existence and development is considered to obtainsatisfactory happy life. Along with society’s development and progress, it’s more persistentand firm for people to pursue this goal. In order to provide universal theory reference andguidance for people to live a happy life, a lot of extremely wise sociologists, economists,philosophers and ethicists put forward profound theory and method, such as utilitarianism,free supremacy, justice theory, etc.But as time goes by, these social ethics or justice theories are more or less havelimitations in the test of practice and can not well adapt to the needs and changes ofsociety. Therefore, Amartya Sen, the Nobel Prize winner of economics, Indian scholar,puts forward capabilities approach. His this method, uses for reference the Rawls’s classicanalysis about "basic goods", pays attention to considerations of utilitarianism andconsequentialism, focuses on the freedom that people think they have reason to value inthe actual life. This method provides a more extensive information base and moreinclusive value standard for the measurement of human’s development and welfare, and atheoretical basis in order to solve practical problems, and becomes a new normative theoryin social development, welfare research and poverty measurement etc.In order to provide the theory basis and the technical reference for further application,the paper hope to make this theory understood clearly and thoroughly through clarifyingconnotation, combing theoretical framework and a detailed analysis about applicationprinciple, conditions and existing dispute. At the same time, this study attempts to use thedata from the World Values Survey and summarize a capability list suitable for the realisticenvironment, so as to explore two sexes’ capability situation, analyze the differencebetween two sexes’ capability, find out what are the most valuable capability that peoplethink and give priority. Thus play a reference effect in policy making and socialdevelopment and meet the different gender’s capability better.
