This paper makes a case study on the event of "replace the schoolhouse with a temple", and to refine the elements of social work from the practice, analyzing the grassroots characteristics of rural social work practice and to promote the specialization of the foundation. To make some reflections on how to promoting rural social work occupation toward specialization, socialization bases on that:discover our folk thoughts in the social work values; promote endogenous development of rural social work, the people who in rural community are not only the client of social worker,but also the resource provider, they should be trained by social work professional knowledge and skills; develop the NGO grassroots organizations,under the guidance of government to strengthen social participation.The introduction part mainly introduces the history and theory of rural social work and the main achievements of practice research. The rural social work appeared later than the city social work; professional social work practice is less than that in city. Our country is the country that farmers are the main baby; the rural social work in China has an important role in the harmonious society. Social work in rural communities to explore the theory revolves mainly around the community capacity building and community development in community social work. There are some special practices of rural social work in China, such as Yunnan Lvzhai experience, Wanzai mode in Jiangxi and Xiangxi mode in Hunan.The second part of the paper is about detailed analysis of the antecedents and consequences of the event, which calls "replace the schoolhouse with a temple" by the writer. The social background of "replace the schoolhouse with a temple" is the reusing of the schoolhouse, which was vacant after the school merger policy, and the temple is predecessor of the schoolhouse. Then the residents in Long Village deploy a course of self-help action of finding the common demand and resources, on the driving of public spiritual and cultural requirement.The third part of the paper mainly analyses the "replace the schoolhouse with a temple" events by the sociological significance. The social space adjustment in village, the game on social culture, the reconstruction of social order which all make Long Village becoming necessity and possibility in promoting the rural social work development. Necessity is reflected in the gradually social problem in village and the requirements of community order reconstruction and the public spirit space needed. And the traditional consciousness and action of self-help and making good use of social resources in village, that makes the rural social work propulsion to become possibility.The fourth part is the extension of the third part."Replace the schoolhouse with a temple" as a point of to promote professional social work to rural community, this part analyses in-depth of the development factors of rural social work--helping behavior and help people process, elite groups who help others, the value concept of help others and self-help; and analyzes the grassroots characteristics in the community practice, puts forward some opinions about how to advancing professional social work. The community development model should be taken in rural by rural social work, to empower the community residents, and improve residents’ initiative participation.The conclusion summarizes the principles should be followed in rural social work professional advancement:transforming the perspective of lack-oriented instead of the strengths perspective, cultivating local community elites, improve he participation awareness and participation ability of the rural community, exploring the resources and advantages in rural community, so that can we promote the social development of social work.
