Study On Interaction Between The Local University And Soft Power Of Urban Culture

Universities are considered as a key factor to measure the development of urbanculture in the world. The basic strength and cultural support for the cultural prosperity anddevelopment of the city is the local university resources. Local university is usually thecenter of education, culture and research of the city and the spirit of the university isusually the driving force for promoting the progress of the city. The function of the localuniversity in promoting the soft power of urban culture shows in several aspects, such asleading the development of urban culture, promoting the urban civilization process andsublimating image of urban culture and city spirit. For the city, it must choose a road withlocal characteristics to enhance cultural soft power, which based on local resources and thereality of the city.This paper bases on three relevant theories, which is interaction theory about theuniversity and the city, the functions of the university and the Urban Sociology. Themethods used in this paper are qualitative analysis and empirical analysis. This paperdraws on the basic discuss of the relevant research both in China and abroad, analyze thedevelopment status of the local university and the soft power of Foshan culture, make anempirical analysis to the relationship and find out the problems between them.From literature review and basic theories we draw a conclusion that the localuniversity impacts on the soft power of urban culture and promotes urban culturaldevelopment in several ways such as leading the development of urban culture，promotethe urban civilization process and sublimate image of urban culture and city spirit. Fromthe empirical analysis we found that Foshan University and the soft power of Foshan’sculture are weak in synergistic effect, the discipline construction of the local universitylags behind the development of the city. Local university plays an important role inpromoting the development of the soft power of urban culture. The support localuniversity gets from the city is not enough. They are deviating from each other to someextent.According to the existing problems there are three strategies to be suggested, which are set up the mechanism of open communication, build the university culture integrationmechanism and the university and urban culture integrated system and strengthen contactsbetween communities and university.
