A Study Of Oxford University’s Cultural Soft Power

With the development of higher education reformation, universities in China gradually achieved the transition from development of scale to development of quality. However, many problems have arisen during the transition period. For example, excessively meeting the needs of the market, and blindly pursuing marketization and industrialization have caused the reduction of education quality. Some universities even received warnings from the Education Departments. One important reason is the ignorance of the construction of culture soft power. Therefore, enhancing the culture soft power of universities has become the top priority currently. Due to the lack of experience, it’s necessary for representatives from domestic universities to learn advanced experience on that aspect from foreign top-brand universities. As the world’s top university, Oxford University has the irreplaceable right on it worth learning. Firstly, the paper analyzes the meaning, features and influence on university’sdevelopment of culture soft power. Secondly, it elaborates the current situation of construction of culture soft power in Oxford University, from three aspects including common culture, shared system, and common concept. The common culture is the combination between free atmosphere and agreed value. The shared system is the effective and sound system. And the common concept is the firm belief and adaptation to trend of development. Thirdly, it analyzes the influence on Oxford’s development caused by construction of culture soft power from two aspects:the inner effect and the external effect. Finally, based on the above analysis, the paper gives a conclusion to the features of Oxford’s culture soft power, as constancy, novelty, and effectiveness. Lacking such features has led the construction in China into some impedes, including the tendency of focusing on form instead of contents, unbalanced development of social practices, and homogenization of school systems. Therefore, during the construction period, domestic universities should improve atmosphere, advance inheritance and innovation of culture, strive to develop culture industry and actively carry out cooperation and communication.Taking the advantage of literature method and historical analysis, this paper does researches on Oxford University’s construction on culture soft power from microscopic view to macroscopic view. The innovation point of this paper is the combing of common culture, shared concept, and common system of Oxford University, the analyzing of inner effect caused by Oxford University’s construction on culture soft power and the external influence on its development, and summarizing experience form Oxford University. However, the paper briefly focuses on the influence on development form some aspects. There’s no doubt that some problems must lie in its construction. Therefore, the conclusion should be objective, and avoid overgeneralization.
