Over the last three decades of reform and opening up, China’s higher education has been developing by leaps and bounds. As an important type of higher education, higher vocational education has also flourished over recent years. After nearly30years of exploration, practice and development, independent higher vocational colleges have reached the number of1,200, accounting for70%of the total number of colleges and universities and the number of vocational school students has increased to over13million, accounting for more than half of the total college students, In terms of scale, vocational schools take up half of China’s higher education. Faced with new circumstances and new developments in vocational education, vocational counselors have to meet enormous challenges. A pressing problem for vocational counselors that needs to be solved is how to make innovations and train vocational students to adapt to new situations. The distinctive nature of vocational education and students determines the distinctive nature of their counselors’ work, namely, in terms of management, counselors should attach great importance to the management of students’ daily lives so as to discipline their behavior and guarantee their safety; in terms of education, quality education should be stressed and efforts should be made to help students achieve all-round development; in terms of service, the principle of "people comes first" should be emphasized and counselors should help students accomplish healthy growth and lay a solid foundation for their future employment. However, there exist many problems in real work such as maladjustment, inappropriate methods, lack of passion and inadequate research, which exerts a severely negative impact on counselors’work. The causes for these problems are as follows: busy schedule for management, job function disorders; recognition of the work is not high and work quality is low; their academic and professional quality is not high; increasing growth of emotional burnout, lack of enthusiasm for the work; less learning and training opportunities, lack of new ideas. To solve these problems, we must be innovative in our vocational counselor’ work. It is the urgent need for improving counselors’work, the necessary requirement for pursuit of "three represents" in higher vocational education, and the objective demand for achieving professionalization of vocational counselors. This paper provide solutions to innovations for counselors’ work in higher vocational school in four different ways. Firstly, gaining a clarified consciousness of counselors’work and enable counselors to function in a well-organized and well-coordinated way; second, work according to particular circumstances and teach according to students’talent; thirdly, counselors should advance with times and transform their minds; fourth, establish comprehensive and systemic institutions and regulations.Higher vocational education is prospering, but theoretical research into vocational counselors is relatively lagging behind. Based on a research combining theory with practice, this paper provides some theoretical and practical support for the vocational counselors’innovation.
