In the past, teacher assessment in China has been used mainly for administrative purpose.The main purpose of teacher evaluation is a recommendation to either renew or to terminatethe employment. Nowadays, as the teacher study develops, teacher evaluation is graduallyviewed as a means of enhancing teacher professional development, and the purpose ofschool and administrators toward teacher evaluation is to promote teacher ongoingprofessional development. Self-assessment is an instruction that drives self-verification andself-enhancement.Self-assessment has some benefits: it is easy to operate, and it has no limitation oflocation and time. This case study uses the tool of self-assessment to observe and record theprofessional growth of three English high school teachers in Liaoning province in China.The study is of qualitative nature using three data collecting methods: observation, interview,and survey. This thesis describes a series of teacher changes that when teachers useself-assessment to modify their teaching concepts, behaviors and skills. The English TeacherSelf-assessment Form is used at the beginning, during and at the ending of the semester forthe teachers to assess themselves.Contrasting the scores, teachers conclude the professional development on this year. Thefindings prove that self-assessment is proved as a powerful technique for improving teacherprofessional development. The aim is to indicate important characteristics of teacherself-assessment that can promote three English teachers professional developments. Thisstudy gives a brief frame to guide English teachers and school administrators to applyteacher self-assessment and provide a practical procedure.The innovation of this thesis, form the view of methodology, comparing with the formerstudies use a method of quantitative data which is consist of abundant of surveys, this casestudy mainly use qualitative (interviews, surveys, self-assessment forms, reflective journals)data. It is not only a challenge, but also a break through. From the view of content, unlikestudies done by other researchers both abroad and in China about teacher professionaldevelopment and teacher evaluation, the thesis focuses on regarding teacher evaluation as amain instrument to develop their professional skills, describe the characteristic of teacherself-assessment and the whole process of enhancing teacher professional skills.
