| Formative assessment plays an important role in the process of English learning. The use of formative assessment can stimulate students’enthusiasm for learning, promote the cognitive level of the learners, and improve their learning efficiency.’English curriculum standards’ put forward student-centered in English teaching. New ’English curriculum standards’ also emphasize that assessment plays an important role in English curriculum, and scientific assessment system is an important guarantee for achieving curriculum standards. Teaching result depends on teaching process, so we must attach importance to formative assessment. Motivation plays a vital role for students. New English curriculum standards put forward that the teachers should pay attention to not only the language knowledge of students and the development of language skills, but also the development of their emotional attitude. The teachers should develop students’interest, motivation, self-confidence, and cooperative learning consciousness. Students in senior high school are in a particular stage of growth, so how to cultivate their stable motivation, stimulate students’ desire for knowledge and interest in learning, which should be focused by every English teacher in senior high school, so the teachers need to use the appropriate assessment tools to fully mobilize the learners’ enthusiasm and interest, inspire their motivation.This research can help teachers actively make use of formative assessment to stimulate students ’enthusiasm for learning, form a stable motivation in English learning, improve their independent learning ability, complete English learning goals and provide some suggestions for teachers in senior high school on how to stimulate students’ initiative and enthusiasm, which can enhance the quality of teaching and make the objectives achieved smoothly. The use of appropriate assessment tools in the teaching process is helpful for not only the day-to-day teaching, but also promoting students’ enthusiasm. This thesis attempts to explore the following three questions.(1) What effects does formative assessment have on English learning motivation in senior high school?(2) To what extent does formative assessment have effects on English intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivaton?(3) How can formative assessment be used to stimulate students’ learning motivation?In order to answer the three questions, this research was taken in Liaoning province, Xiong Yue senior high school from September16th,2012to January11th,2013. This author selected104(N=104) subjects, and the students are from two parallel classes. One class is experimental class and another is control class. Every class has52students, with one English teacher to teach them. Experimental class was taught by using formative assessment to improve students’ motivation in the teaching process, while control class was taught by using traditional methods. In this experiment, the author mailly used the questionnaire, interviews, at the same time, quantitative and qualitative analysis. The experimental class shows that they have a preliminary understanding of learning purposes, learning outcomes and the measures they should take, which shows that the students have higher enthusiasm.By research, this paper provides some recommendations to enhance motivation and the author hopes that this paper can help and inspire other teachers. |
