Vocabulary is an important part of language. In our country, vocabulary teaching has never been ignored, but the effect of vocabulary teaching is not satisfactory. The main reason is that many students still memorize words by mechanical ways. They know little about words, that’s to say they just know the basic meaning of words, but have no idea of the motivations of phonology, morphology and etymology. To change this situation, I advocate the teaching of primary English lexical motivations.Lexical motivation means the source of vocabulary, namely the source of phonology, morphology, semantics and other aspects about words. Teaching lexical motivations can not only enhance the effect of vocabulary memorizing, stimulate students’interest in learning, but also be an effective way to cultivate cultural awareness. This essay adopts the research method of literature and content analysis. First of all, I introduce the motivations of phonology, morphology and etymology, and demonstrate the correlation between lexical motivations and vocabulary acquisition. Then, I take the vocabulary of 《Starting Line》 as an example to analyze the phonological motivations, morphological motivations and etymological motivations of primary English vocabulary. By collating words, I found that there are about100words which have phonological motivations. The morphological motivation can be divided into pictographic motivation and word-formation motivation. There are about50words which have pictographic motivation. Word-formation motivation mainly includes derivatives and compound words. According to the statistics, compound words have the largest number, about100. The number of etymological words is also very large. I mainly analyze the etymological motivation of seven kinds of words. The last part is the research on the teaching of lexical motivations. Firstly, I put forward five teaching principles of lexical motivations:intuitive principle, interesting principle, heuristic principle, connecting principle and practical principle. Then, I introduce some teaching activity designs of lexical motivations based on the above teaching principle. At last, I propose some teaching suggestions about lexical motivation.
