A Research On The Functions Of Ideological And Political Education For College Students’ Voluntary Service

It’s explicitly pointed out that strengthening social development was animportant guarantee for social harmony and stability in the report to theEighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China. Voluntaryservice is a vital symbol and method to strengthen social management andpromote social civilization! In China, College students’ voluntary service is notonly a major part of social voluntary service, but also an effective approach andvehicle for colleges to carry out ideological and political education. Collegestudents’ voluntary service has expanded new forms of cultural life on campusand created a new social mobilization mode and mechanism. It has become afavorite spiritual fashion for contemporary college students.College students’ voluntary service, inheriting Chinese traditional virtues oftaking pleasure in helping others and making contributions to society, innovatingthe vehicle of campus culture as well as reflecting spiritual civilization of the eraand the essence of education, is a true practice of Chinese characteristic socialistcore value system, and puts the new mission “constructing a socialist harmonioussociety” into practice. College volunteers have become active power in leadingmodern social conduct in China. Therefore, an in-depth research on collegestudents’ volunteering and an active study on the functions of ideological andpolitical education for college students’ voluntary service are of practical as wellas theoretical significance in launching college students’ volunteering in a deep-going way.This paper emphasizes the integration of theory with practice. Based ontheoretical analysis, it makes empirical analysis in practice from the perspectiveof college students’ voluntary service. Through field study and questionnairesurvey of college students’ volunteering participation in some colleges in Harbin,Heilongjiang province, this paper analyzes the current situation of collegestudents’ voluntary service as well as raises its problems and underlying reasons for those problems.This paper manages to better present the functions of ideological andpolitical education for college students’ voluntary service, so it stresseseducational function, function of educating people, directing function, coheringfunction, exemplary function and practical function of college students’ voluntaryservice, and on that basis, it proposes several approaches to improve functions ofideological and political education for college students’ voluntary service in newage considering the present situation of college students’ voluntary service:perfecting educational management to highlight the educational function;improving volunteers’ sense of participation to advocate the function ofeducating people; practicing the core value to strengthen the directing function;advocating voluntary spirit to show the cohering function; enhancing publicity topromote the exemplary function; and taking an active part in voluntary service torealize the practical function.
