Languages are the media of culture. The formation and growth of a culturehave to rely on the expression of its language. As culture evolves, the languagealso undergoes a process of enrichment and improvement. English textbooks notonly provide the English learners with language inputs, but also an importantsource of English culture. Therefore, priorities have to be attached on the teachingof both English language and culture in the ELT of Chinese high schools, so as tolead the teenagers in school to have a sound understanding of the cultures of bothhome and abroad with a healthy and positive value.In2001, Chinese Education Ministry issued "the junior middle schoolEnglish curriculum standards" which includes cultural awareness in the content ofthe course standard, specifying that students should have “understanding of thecultural difference of China and the West, with extensive vision and patriotism, aswell as a righteous value of life. So under the guidance of "the junior middleschool English curriculum standards", more and more engaged in English teachersalso realize the importance and necessity of culture teaching along with ELT. Atthe same time effective culture teaching in training students’ comprehensiveability to use language has an important role. Culture teaching should runsthroughout the whole teaching process to achieve effective teaching results.Encourage students to master English communication ability. Through thismultilateral review and study, students are inspired to learn and understand thedifferences between different national culture, respect and understanding offoreign culture, and deepen our national cultural identity has vital significance.The writer of this thesis focuses on the analysis of cultural elements inEnglish textbooks in the research. At present, insufficient attention has been paidon the cultural teaching in ELT in the Chinese high school education, especially inthe evaluation on English teachers. In the first step of this research, analysis is made on cultural elements in the English textbook published by Renai Press, witha classification of cultural knowledge and communicative culture.Secondly, with a close examination of the curriculum development, a soundunderstanding is gain on the cultural teaching guideline of the curriculum reforms.Finally, with a study on cultural connotation of the new curriculum goal, anaccurate view has been gained on the specific goal of culture teaching. Accordingto the five-level goals and objectives of evaluation criteria of the "English coursestandard (experiment draft)", the writer sums up the static information in thetextbooks, combination of dynamic data in the actual teaching. Demonstrated inthe ELT practice, a picture of culture structure in the English textbook has beengained, which enables English teachers in high school to reflect on the deviationof cultural awareness existing in their ELT practice, so as to improve teachingstrategy of foreign language and cultures.
