Textbooks have great influence on students and none of anyotherbooks can compare with them. They are important teaching tools forschools to reach their educational objectives. Chinese (Mandarin) is thenative language of China. The Chinese is the first basic course duringprimary school period, therefore Chinese textbooks’ status and functionbecome more outstanding. Primary school Chinese textbooks areimportant materials for beginners to start studding Chinese. They directlydetermine the effect of teaching and learning, and their quality has directaffect on primary school students’ Chinese learning.This paper is based on Education Science, Psychology, EducationalPsychology and integrated of the courses and teaching practices. It did acomparative study on “Enlightened Mandarin Book” lower primary andhigher primary (total12volumes) of Republican period and “The PrimarySchool Chinese Textbook” grade1-6(total12volumes) published by theLanguage&Culture Press in the modern21st century. This paperanalyzes two main aspects, the formal structure and content, to find outthe similarities and differences of the two and experiences for textbookedition of Chinese for primary school in present age.This paper includes five chapters: Chapter One–Introduction;Chapter Two–Backgrounds of the two kinds of textbook; Chapter Three –the comparisons on the formal structures of the two kinds of textbook,mainly in the macro and micro level, the former goes from content andcompiling system and the later gets more detailed that it has acomparative analysis on the book size setting, front cover, back cover,guidance, parentheses, illustrations and exercises; Chapter Four-thecomparisons of the content structures of the two. Content is the mostimportant part of textbooks. This chapter focuses on the comparisons inthree aspects: language knowledge, language ability and articles selection;Chapter Five–conclusion and proposal.
