The reform of new curriculum and core competencies require that the contents of the curriculum should be connected to the real life and students’ life experience.The contents should focus on students as the subject of study and their participation in class activities.English,as a practical subject,the use of the language also requires that the contents of the curriculum should be connected to the real life.Based on the educational reform,the new educational idea calls for the reform of teaching methods.Life-oriented teaching used in English teaching meets the need of educational reform and conforms to the rule of English learning.This thesis adopts documentary study,interviewing methods and class observation methods.Through the study of the current situation of English teaching in senior middle schools,it shows the problems because of the lack of life-oriented teaching,including the lack of student participation,the use of the language,the interest of class,and the limit of textbooks and English classes.Explore the reasons behind these problems,including the blocks of Entrance Exam System to the implement of life-oriented teaching,teachers’ lack of ideas of life-oriented teaching and teaching skills,the study limit of textbooks and classes and the imperfection of assessment system.Finally,strategies are given from the following aspects: implement and deepen the new reform of curriculum,promote teachers’ ideas of lifeoriented teaching and teaching skills,provide English materials and resources of life-oriented teaching for students and perfect the assessment system.The study in this thesis shows it’s essential and urgent to implement the English life-oriented teaching in senior middle schools.The English life-oriented teaching in senior middle schools is in conflict with the co-existing pressure of entrance exams and difficult to balance the two.In order to get the implement of the English lifeoriented teaching in senior middle schools out of trouble,joint efforts should be made by the country,schools,teachers and students.
