With the continuous development of market economy, different kinds of public institutions become more and more important in people’s life and social interaction. Meanwhile, some emergent public hazards in recent years show that China is in urgent need of trust reconstruction and trust transformation. Public trust in public institutions has great influence on the normal order and the harmonious development of the whole society. Therefore, analyzing the compositions and the influencing factors of this relationship through Quantitative Research Method can provide some references for the reconstruction and the development.Based on the sample datas of the Chinese General Social Survey in2010, this thesis puts forward that the trust of the urban and rural residents in public institutions lies in two aspects:the public power agency and the social institution. Using these as the dependent variables, it sets up six models through the total sample, the sample of the urban residents and the rural residents. In terms of the independent variables, the author introduces nineteen variables of four types, for example, the interpersonal trust(universal trust and special trust), political participation(political efficacy and community politics participation), the features of modern civilized society(degree of social justice and information media use), personal social and economic status. After building the models, the descriptive statistics, comparison, factor analysis and multiple regression analysis are carried on with the help of the SPSS software. Besides, the author also makes a sample comparison between urban and rural areas. In this way, we can find that universal trust has some positive impacts on public institutions. On the other hand, the higher special trust is, the more the residents trust the public power agency. External political efficacy positively relates to the institutional trust while the ascension of internal political efficacy brings the ascent of the rural residents’ trust in social institutions. Collaborative community participation improves urban residents’ trust in public power agency and confrontational community action makes the trust of rural residents flow away. However, this does not affect the trust of urban citizens directly. Age effects on rural public power agency is parabolic-shaped while the influence on urban social institution is U-shaped. In addition, other social and economic factors have different effects on the trust in public institutions either.
