The English Curriculum Standards of Fulltime Compulsory Education is the guidance for English language teaching.Different grades may have different requirements in English Curriculum Standards. The speaking target of the second level for primary school students is that clear pronunciation and correct intonation. However, the current situation of the phonetic teaching relies too much on imitating the International Phonetic Alphabets. Study shows that the application of the Phonetic Alphabet could not change students’form of being afraid to speak English; they have unclearly pronunciation, unnatural intonation, and their rhyme and rhythm of the lack of fluency and beauty.To help improve English learning efficiency in pronunciation, and change the rote learning to fun learning, this article explore the feasibility and validity of imitation teaching to advocate teachers and students to pay attention to imitation, a traditional teaching method in China, based on the theories of Bandura’s processes of observational learning, Thorndike’s learning law, and the cognitive rule of primary school student. This article supposes that imitation is not only the basic way of learning pronunciation, but also an efficient strategy. The key point of this method is to choose proper teaching strategies according to different materials and contents and imitate the target sounds step by step. In order to demonstrate the validity of imitation teaching strategy, this article uses the qualitative analysis. The research draws a conclusion that imitation teaching strategy can be implicated because internal and external conditions permit, it is affected by the imitation subjects, the imitation objects, the imitation material and the imitation methods, it can help students grasp the language rules and improve their phonetic ability from direct imitation to creative imitation and it will promote the phonetic effect of learning in the process of imitation teaching and raise pupils’interest of learning.
