| Being the18th chapter of Book of Rites, Xue Ji summarized the educational experience and theories of the Confucian school during the Pre-Qin period. Xue Ji systematically made an account of educational theories for the first time in the history of human beings. And it is the extremely important educational literature in the history of Chinese education and human education. Short as it is, Xue Ji is rich in contents, covering almost all modern pedagogical thoughts. It made a systematic account of educational functions, school institutions, school management, educational principles, pedagogical principles, teaching methods, teacher-student relationship, the development of teachers and educational assessment. Since ancient Chinese education focused on the education of the Chinese language, the educational thoughts registered on Xue Ji are more closely linked to the education of the Chinese language in the contemporary society. Given the fact that the curriculum of the Chinese Language is going through reforms, it is of great importance for us to make thorough study into the educational thoughts of Xue Ji in the hope of drawing on its education and teaching quintessence to reflect on and guide our contemporary Chinese Language Education. Such endeavor is expected to facilitate the reform of the new curriculum of Chinese Language Education. The paper mainly analyzed the teaching ideas of Chinese Language education in Xue Ji. Besides, the paper outlined the implication for our contemporary Chinese Language teaching that we can draw out of Xue Ji. The whole paper was divided into three sections. The first section traced back to the ideological sources and the completion date of Xue Ji. In this section, the author verified that Xue Ji is the first classic book on the subject of education in China and even around the world. The relationship between Xue Ji and Confucian classics, the various schools of thought and their exponents during the period from pre-Qin times to the early years of the Han Dynasty, and literary classics was looked into. Meanwhile, the completion date of Xue Ji was under investigation. The second section dealt with the implication of Xue Ji to the subjects of Chinese language learning and the professional development of teachers. In this section, the author made research into People-Oriented Thought proposed in Xue Ji, the relationship between teachers and students, the relation between teaching and learning. It is through such research that the author came up with the implication of Xue Ji to the subjects of Chinese Language learning and the professional development of teachers. The third section focused on the implication of pedagogical principles in Xue Ji to the teaching of contemporary Chinese Language. This section explored the connotation of five pedagogical principles. The first is that teaching and learning should promote and enhance each other. The second is that students should be enlightened and guided. The third is that classroom teaching should work closely with extracurricular activities. The forth is that students should learn step by step and learn from each other. The fifth is that teachers should promote students’virtues and strong points while correcting their defects. With the support of modern educational psychology of modern Chinese Language teaching, the author unfolded to readers the application value of teaching principles in Xue Ji to modern teaching of Chinese Language. The conclusion part stated that ancient thoughts should be applied to the contemporary society. It is expected that we study Xue Ji while taking the reality of modern Chinese Language curriculum reforms into account. Through such research, we hope that we can broaden the scope of Chinese Language education, improve our command of the Chinese education thoughts, and carry out the teaching of Chinese Language in a more satisfactory manner. |
