Geography teaching mode plays a significant role in the geography teaching practice and builds a bridge of communications between teaching theory and teaching practice. With the development of education information and the need of innovative teaching mode, geography teaching mode research is of great importance to current reforms of geography curriculum and smooth implementation of the geography teaching process. At present how to keep with the rapid development of geography education, to integrate elements effectively, and give full play to overall functionality of geography teaching system are key points of geography teaching mode research. Based on geography information technology, this paper analyzes and compares current applications of geography teaching mode in teaching process, thus puts forward a new geography teaching model which is content oriented.There are mainly five parts in this paper as below.The first part is the introduction about the background and significance. It summarizes overseas and domestic research status and development trend of teaching model to determine content, ideas as well as research methods.The second part is the theoretical basis. Firstly, it mainly explains concept, elements and characteristics of teaching model for clarifying its object of research. Secondly, this paper presents the theoretical basis of creative teaching model under support of geography information technology through various theories of education information, model of teaching, information technology and curriculum integration etc.The third part is the new teaching mode construction for geography. Considering various aspects such as analyzing application status of geography information technology, comparing informational teaching mode with others, designing teaching model under the support of geography information technology, this part puts forward ideas and schemes of the constructed new mode.The forth part is the teaching practice based on the new teaching mode of geography. In the case of natural geography teaching, this section respectively carries out case studies of the components of new geography teaching mode which include "display ","deep experience" and "strong interaction" etc.The fifth part is the conclusion. It summarizes research conclusions of geography teaching mode, reflects some inadequate of this research and indicates further research directions.
