The design of writing system in language textbook which is an indispensable component of the textbook can not only represent the prevailing value orientation of writing in a country but also embody the designer’s teaching philosophy of writing. The writing system in American Literature is designed as closed to our daily life, object-oriented, thought-invoking, interesting, creative, collaborative as well as comprehensive, which as a result is helpful in transforming the knowledge in students’mind into their practical competence. However, in our country, the design of writing system in Chinese textbooks used in high schools is always so poor. For example, the goal of writing is set ambiguously and impractically, which leads to such a fact as students have to finish the task by self-studying and always fail to achieve the goals set in advance. Although there are many differences between Chinese and American culture, we still can learn from each other. Considering the unique characteristic of writing in Chinese, we could learn something from the design of American Literature, a good example, to work out a series of scientific writing textbook which is consistent with the reality of our country and the development of times.Taking the American Literature published by Chinese Women’s Press and Chinese by People’s Education Press for instance, the author will take several research methods such as case study, document study and comparison, to conduct a comparative analysis of the writing system in language textbook between China and America. This paper is divided into four sections as follows:the first chapter is a overall description for the structure of writing system of the two versions; the second chapter is a comparative study of writing system between the two versions, from the aspects like combination of reading and writing, writing instruction, and writing training; the third chapter is an exploration into the teaching philosophies of writing implied in the two versions, and a comparison is also conducted in chapter three; in the fourth chapter, the author is trying to seek the enlightenment from American language published by Chinese Women’s Press to structure our own writing system, through analyzing the principles of designing, content choosing, and writing practice arrangement.
