Storytelling seems to be the oldest art in the world, which is not only a cultural entertainment activity essential to humans’survival and development, but is also a vivid impromptu creation education. In Zouma County, Chongqing municipality, storytelling and listening to stories have been a custom that have lasted for hundreds of years. There are more than three hundred folk story-tellers in the ancient county. Someone has even made it into a profession. Why do people here like so much about storytelling, What is the role of folk stories in Zouma County’s cultural structure, What is the relationship between the storytelling and the cultural system that nurtures storytelling? What important enlightenment can it give to our current school education?Based on Zouma County’s storytelling, this paper focuses on extracurricular education, trying to answer the above questions in the perspective of education. From the collating of the literature information, the whole research process traces to the source of the zouma town folk stories, revealing the cultural ecological environment generated in the Zouma town folk story, as well as its developing process and evolutions; and then by the deep interview and participant observation, this paper grasps the operation mechanism of the folk stories as a whole, analyzing the six elements that constitute the story, including the storyteller, story audience, story concept, story codes, story medium, and story context, so as to explore the formation mechanism of the storytelling customs. The research suggests that the folk storytelling is a dynamic and open structural system, whose spreading process has all the elements that push the educator, educate, educational content and other matters related to education occurred. Finally, this paper discusses the educational value of spreading process of folk stories and enlightenment that folk stories have for us.The research result shows that transmission of Zouma County’s folk stories relies on festivals and story-telling session to carry forward the social and historical culture from one generation to another to achieve the educational aim. The folk storytelling is a traditional and co-host life for Zouma people, which play a balance role on public psychology in the periodic activities of the village. Since such an educational process hasn’t the formal education space, it is not only a kind of experiential education and a kind of introductory education, but also a kind of living education, which realizes the generation, dissemination and creation of the folk culture, in certain circumstances, through interactive communication. Its education value mainly shows the transmission of ethnic culture, the development of good character and the positive effects of the emotion and so on.
