This research starts on the value of the folk literature as the language curriculumresource, based on the study about the status that folk literature presenting in the languageteaching material of the primary and secondary school at the republican period and afterthe liberation, summarizes the feature and shortcomings that folk literature shows in everyedition of the teaching material, gives some suggestions to the author of the teachingmaterial about the screening and processing the folk literature and at last providing someoperable advises about the usage of the folk literature in language teaching.The study finds out that folk literature, comparing to the works of the writers, has adistinct personality and unique value which has the immeasurable role in developing andimproving the student’s language literacy. But in nowadays, the folk literatures in theteaching materials have some shortcomings. So the screening process of the folk literatureshould follow four principles: traditional culture, aesthetic, children based and localcharacteristics. While processing these folk literatures, three principles should be followed:using spoken language, child psychology and should be true and useful. Considering thatthe folk literature in teaching material lacks of system, this paper gives the screening andprocessing strategy based on the history period, local evolution and vulgar-eleganceconversion. In the teaching process of folk literature, the frontline teacher should have theprofound understanding of the feature of the folk literature which can help folk literatureplay the unique value in language courses and avoid the teaching becoming dogmatic.
