The Empirical Analysis Of College Homosexual Students’Uses And Gratifications Of LGBT Alternative Media

With the development of Chinese ideological environment and the introduction of western culture, LGBT being fringe groups in society are coming into view of public as well as being discussed and understood by public in recent years. Especially in last several years, some subcultures of homosexuality such as Yaoi fandom culture and Tanbi culture are being in fashion. In the meanwhile, the massive media’s attention to gay people reaches an unprecedented level. The situation that homosexuality and homosexual cultures are integrating into massive culture is becoming more and more obvious.In this social condition, academic researches about LGBT are gradually increasing especially from fields like society, psychology, medical science, journalism and communication. But empirical researches about media life of LGBT still need to be expanded.This study below based on the uses and gratifications theory, uses the empirical research, and samples among the LGBT students of Shandong University. By questionnaire survey and in-depth interviews, this research investigates LGBT students’motivations, behaviors and gratifications in using the LGBT alternative media, and furthermore, analyzes the interrelations between each other and between the demographics, so as to show their visualized features of using LGBT media.According to the research, during the process of using the alternative media, LGBT students usually have motives for information acquisition, status identification and construction, communications, resources acquisition and entertainment. Meanwhile four satisfactions as information acquisition, belongingness and joint satisfactions and entertainment occur. These motives and satisfactions are obviously different with each other under different backgrounds and using behaviors, and there is a positive correlation between motives and parallel satisfactions.
