Since the mid-1990s, Internet, which is based on TCP/IP protocol family movedfrom research institutions into massive residential and commercial use. Telecomoperators of most countries stared to provide users with extensive broadband IP datanetwork access services.Meanwhile, companies require that only authorized users canaccess their own internal networks, and traffic accounting policies are adopted byeducation network, while the VOD system is based on demand of the time charges, etc.All these most common network applications are faced with the same question: How toimplement the functions of user authentication and accounting? The commonauthentication and accounting methods-RADIUS protocol can resolveuserauthentication, authorization, and accounting issues in the IP network accessenvironment. In this paper, the implementation of RAIDUS subsystem in IP network supportingplatform, based on UNIX/Linux operating system and modular dynamic loadingtechnology, is discussed in detail. And the following aspects of research:1. General introduction for RADIUS protocol, including protocol basic concepts, applications, protocol structure introduction and protocol extensions, etc.2. With the modular, dynamic library runtime loading technology and other designideas, the RADIUS subsystem architecture design and main functions areimplemented.3. Regarding to the requirements of meeting the demands of interfacing with differentvendors, different IP network equipment such as BRAS, LNS, PDSN etc. theimplementationof general access adapter layer and unified device access frameworkis discussed.4. Researched on the performance optimization of RADIUS server, including userinformation caching and searching algorithm based on Hash table with highefficiency.5. Constructed the system monitoring and test environment of RADIUS subsystem, bywhich to verify the feasibility and stability of the developed RADIUS serverprogram. And the need for further research is pointed out finally.
