In the background of globalization of technology innovation and knowledge production,innovation model evolves from linear and local model to network model. At the same time, itbecomes more and more open. In order to innovate effectively, firms need to search a variety ofvaluable resources. So, it is the external social relationship network that makes firms get theirresources. Long term engaged in basic scientific research and development, colleges andresearch institutes become the important creator of new technology&knowledge as well as theprovider of spillovers. Thus, the relationship due to cooperative innovation between firms,colleges and research institutes turns into an important way for firms to innovate and obtain theircompetitive advantage. And innovation network between firms(industry), colleges and researchinstitutes becomes to a hot topic now. Simultaneously, how does the innovation network createmore spillovers so as to promote firms’ innovation ability is currently a hot issue and it’ssignificant.After combing literatures, it is shown that study on the impact between network structureand performance&knowledge spillovers is a hot issue, but related research on innovationnetwork between firms, colleges and research institutes are less. And it is the same situation asresearches based on theory of open innovation. So based on theory of social network and openinnovation, it is studied that how network structure and exogenous nodes impact knowledgespillover in the innovation network between firms(industry), colleges and research institutes,thus policy recommendations to practice are proposed.Empirical research method was used to study above mentioned issue. First, theoreticalassumption was proposed based on theory of social network and open innovation. Andinnovation network of firms(industry), colleges and research institutes in Guangdong provincefrom1998to2009were set as investigated object. Network was structured and analyzed byUcinet6. Then empirical model was established based on method of knowledge production. Alsoregression analysis was done and the model was tested. Finally it is concluded that network scale,centrality index and exogenous nodes caused by geographic factor demonstrated a positivecorrelation with knowledge spillover. But network density presented a negative correlation.
