After a period of high-speed development, especially in the. first10years of the21st century, the size of the Internet industry as well as the economic influence of the industry has reached quite a height. Affected by the global economic downturn, the Internet industry though entered a winter period, the speed of development of the industry began to slow down, but the industry maintained a high growth rate yet. As a result, the demand for the talented of the Internet companies keeps growing, outstanding middle manager, usually as the most valuable asset to a firm, especially, is in short supply. One survey showed that if we use the traditional enterprise human resources recruitment model to explain the Internet industry which is an emerging industry, the actual performance of the recruited is unsatisfactory. The main reason is that although the theory of the competency model, which originated in the1960s and has developed for more than half a century, has reached a considerable height, there is quite a few research on the Internet-industry case, and even fewer research on the middle managers of the industry. This study is based on this background, trying to explore competency model suited for middle managers of Internet industry of China.In this study, we mainly use competency model to build key behavioral event method, combined with literature analysis, expert interviews and questionnaire analysis method, reaching a preliminary competency model for middle managers of the Internet industry of China. And after the questionnaire querying and evaluation, with help of the SPSS statistical analysis software and AMOS structural equation, we test and verify the preliminary competency model we just built and after some changes to be made, we successfully construct a competency model for Internet middle managers with both validity and reliability.The purpose of this study is not only to supplement the theory of the global competency research on the Internet industry, more importantly, with help of the competency model constructed, but also to provide a reasonable theoretical basis for recruitment, selection, training, evaluation, and career planning for Internet middle managers, so as to improve the current shortage of middle managers, helping the Internet industry getting through the winter period.Competency for middle managers of the Internet industry is one of the biggest creation of this study, because research on competency model on the Internet-industry case in very rare, not only domestically, but also globally, the theoretical significance of this study is self-evident. In the meanwhile, this study also found that the Internet industry has a strong culture of individual freedom, so that loyalty as a competent quality which usually is quite valued in the traditional enterprise receives so little attention in the Internet industry that it does not even appear in the final competency model. Also, in the competency characteristics eventually established in the model, high regression analysis significantly of achievement orientation corresponds to the high demand level as result of high education level of employee of Internet. Therefore, this study has considerable practical value for the selection of the middle managers of the Internet industry also.
