Since the reform and opening up, China’s inbound tourism began to move toward market-oriented and industrialization. Inbound tourism plays an important role in earning foreign exchange, stimulating domestic demand, increasing employment, poverty eradication, optimizing the industrial structure, the spread and inheritance of Chinese culture, foreign exchange. Jiangsu province resorts to rich tourism resources, good location conditions, well-developed economic level, convenient transportation, perfect service facilities, its inbound tourism walking in the forefront of country, but there are some difference in Jiangsu’s internal.This paper collects large amounts of data through various channels of the network, books, Statistical Yearbook, including tourist arrivals and the inbound tourism foreign exchange earnings of Jiangsu province and its13cities, Jiangsu as well the country’s16major source countries and regions’tourist arrivals, Jiangsu as well as its13cities’ GDP and the number of the world’s cultural heritage and AAAAA and AAAA grade spot quantity. This paper studies temporal and spatial evolution of inbound tourism from two aspects separately, they are both Jiangsu province as a tourism destination and Jiangsu province’s inbound tourism market, and comprehensive analyze inbound tourism development characteristics of Jiangsu province at longer time scales, and investigate the reasons of temporal and spatial evolution. The purpose of this research is to provide the basis for promoting Jiangsu’s inbound tourism comprehensive coordinated development and proposing some targeted overseas promotional marketing strategies, and to provide a reference for relevant departments’planning and scientific decision-making.This article includes the following sections.Firstly, this paper analyzes the development and changes of tourist arrivals and tourism foreign exchange earnings of Jiangsu province from1978to2010, and investigates its cycle development.Secondly, through various methods and means of standard deviation, coefficient of variation, the coefficient of concentration, relative development rate, ratio, and ArcGis, this paper studies inbound tourism’s spatial pattern of evolution of Jiangsu province from1996to2010.Thirdly, this paper classifies market competitiveness of13cities in Jiangsu province from2000to2010by market competition model. Fourthly, this paper analyzes core market, the larger potential market, and the edge market of16major inbound tourism source countries (region) of Jiangsu province from2000to2010by familiarity degree with scenic-competitive state matrix.Fifthly, this paper analyzes the reasons of temporal and spatial evolution of inbound tourism in Jiangsu province, including the external factors of economic, political and policy, geopolitical, environmental and the internal conditions of the tourism resources, the level of economic development, the regional conditions and policy factors.
