As a typical settlement of human life, the ancient city witnessed the development process of human civilization. And it also played a variety of roles in economic, political and cultural center in the process of its historical development. The charming ancient city does not just means a visual consumption to the tourists. Its heritage of folk customs and ancient monuments also show the world its historical allusions and legends in a silent way. What is more, ancient city tourism is an integrated consumption of travelling, relaxing and experiencing. Stroll in the ancient city, tourists can stay away from the city noise and pursue a pure life, or think about the past, or just take photos. Backing home or on the way, many tourists will put travel experience with words and illustration on his blog, which for not only sharing it with friends, but also reserving for the evidences of future memories. In view of this, my study would set Fenghuang ancient city in Hunan as the research plots, and seek for the typical landscape elements of frequent appearance of Fenghuang ancient city with the a content analysis of network travels. Then through a deep interview conduct a discussion about Fenghuang elemental symbols and their significance on the basis of the landscape elements.With my work, this study divide typical landscape elements of Fenghuang ancient city into three categories, which are cultural landscape, natural landscape, and local features landscape, including houses on stilts, Tuojiang, cuisines and other elements. And the study also got the results of tourist experiences. Through the analysis of interview data, I draw a conclusion with nine elemental symbols of the Fenghuang ancient city, which include houses on stilts, Miao culture and Shen Congwen which belong to natural landscape; Tuojiang, rafting and night view which belong to cultural landscape; slate street, cuisines which belong to local features landscape. This study also interpretate the significance of these symbols.As an exploratory study, this study has both theoretical and practical value. On the theoretical side, this study can enrich the symbol research of ancient city and deepen the relevant study about the tourism theory of ancient city. In the methodology, this study combine content analysis and depth interviews, breaking the traditional research which through questionnaires to obtain data, and this is the innovation in my research. In practical terms, through an analysis of elemental symbols of ancient city tourism, we can acknowledge the landscapes that tourist favorite, which can provide developers and operators of ancient city tourism, and also provide the basis for the ancient city’s marketing. But I have to say that due to time and other constraints in this study, the selection of research object and plots may be biased, and future research can appropriately increased research subjects and samples in order to improve the applicability and representation of the research findings.The specific content of each chapter and the logical framework of this study are as follows:In the first two chapters, the research background, significance and research framework are mainly introduced, and the theoretical basis of this study and related research are combed and evaluated to guide the design of research programs and the collection of research data. The third chapter mainly introduces the research method include the methods of data collection and data analysis. Chapters IV and V is a report of data analysis process and results of the analysis. The fourth chapter is a content analysis of network travel notes to obtained typical landscape elements of the ancient city Fenghuang, and the fifth chapter is the analysis of interview data to obtain elemental symbols of Fenghuang. In chapter VI, the main conclusions of this study are summarized, while the inadequacies and future prospects of the study are discussed.
