China is the origin country of world’s sericulture. Since the21st century, the most significant change in Chinese sericulture is spatial distribution transition. Study on general rules and influencing factors of the transition has a very important practical significance in promoting stable and healthy development of sericulture industry. This paper firstly combs the history of cocoon development and spatial distribution transition both in the world and in China. Secondly, it analyses the present situation of China’s cocoon production distribution transition from two dimensions, that is, Industrial transfer and industrial concentration. Then, it uses the gravity center method to describe the evolvement track of rice production gravity center of the whole country and the main producing areas. And it establishes panel data econometrics models to investigate the influencing factors of the cocoon production transition in the provincial level. This paper finds that in the period of1990to2012, the proportion of cocoon production in eastern area declines from57.89percent to28.49percent, while the western area rises from34.70%to62.93%. Sericulture development presents significant "transfer from east to west" pattern, and the regional concentration of cocoon production continues to increase. Comprehensive analysis shows that the gravity center of cocoon production shows the obvious trend of moving to southeast with a high speed. Empirical analysis shows that the spatial distribution of cocoon is positively affected by mulberry area, mulberry seeds, per unit seed yield, per unit mulberry area yield, but negatively affected by the per capita net income of rural residents and non-agricultural employment opportunities. Empirical analysis on central and western cocoon production area shows that "Sericulture shift" project plays a great role in promoting cocoon production.According to the conclusions, to achieve the sustainable development of sericulture, we should comply with the rule of sericulture shift, and accelerate technological innovation to improve productivity and efficiency, and reasonably guard against natural risks and regulate the market price to protect farmers from production and operating risks.
