Research On The Influence Of Foreign Genetic Resources For Cattle Husbandry In China

For a long time, with the fast development of China’s cattle industry, the introduction of foreign bovine genetic resources also shows an increasing tendency. The import of foreign genetic resources has important impacts on the development of cattle industry in China. Based on this background, through the national questionnaire survey that covers all Animal Husbandry Bureaus, this article obtained a large number of detailed data. Based on further statistics analysis, we master the present situation about the development Chinese cattle industry, the import of foreign cattle genetic resources and its regional distribution, foreign cattle genetic resources effects on species diversity in China. By building a production function model and choosing several explanatory factors, we intend to measure the economic contribution of foreign genetic resources to China’s beef cattle industry.Several results have been found. Firstly, beef and dairy industry have been greatly developed with the gradually narrowed cattle breeding scale. Secondly, over the years of genetic resources introduction, China imports more cattle genetic material than the live cattle. Thirdly, there are effects of two aspects during the introduction of foreign genetic resources. On the one hand, imported genetic resources can improve Chinese cattle breed, strengthen cattle’s production performance, and promote the development of China’s cattle industry. On the other hand, imported resources are also a threat to the local species diversity. Fourthly, considering all the explanatory factors including regional resources endowment, production cost and labor resources, the economic contribution of foreign genetic resources estimated up to19.61%.In the end, this paper point out the problems existing in the introduction and use of foreign resources, and puts forward relevant suggestions and measures. Research conclusion will help national animal husbandry stations to set long-term plan on animal husbandry development and introduction and utilization of external resources, then offer the rational guide on the introduction and use of genetic resources in the future.
