Business model is defined as the active system. The paper takes value network as the core and expands the Zott and Amit (2010) business model design framework. Activity system of business model is deepened into4parts, i.e., value proposition, value creation, value maintenance and value capturing. Thanks to the active system business model perspective and value network, the study results make business model design be more systematic and operational. more conducive to managers is convenient to use this design model to construct and transform business models.The effect of leadership on the various design components (active content, structure, governance and themes) of business model is explored. Meanwhile, how business model transformation and optimization affected by leadership are also discussed. Through literature analysis, the paper argues that the bottleneck of business model transformation, optimization and design is leadership. Lack of leadership will make business model transformation slow and difficult to succeed. The managers who are short of leadership cannot design a valuable business model.Since2000, especially recently, as economic develops and income increases, the department store industry has vigorously developed. Compared with high growth rate of sales, however, the department store industry profit margins are remain stagnant, while the foreign department store industry profit margins are much higher. By applying the theoretical business model constructed by the paper from the view of leadership, the present business model of department store industry is analyzed and following limitations are concluded:value positioning is not clear and the positioning is low-end; value creation is lack of innovation and cooperation and very little added value is created; value maintenance is lack of customer relationship management and brand management; value achievement has the problem that profits channel is narrow. According to these limitations, this paper redesigns the business model for department store industry, which provides the suggestion for the department store industry changes. And what’s more important is introducing leadership into design, transformation, implementation and optimization of the business model.
