Aromatic alkyl sulfonate is a new type of anionic sulfonate surfactant which have a better property in surface chemistry, biodegradability and anti- hard water when compared with the traditional sulfonate as its sulfonic acid group is attached to the end of the alkyl chain, arousing much focus in this area recently.In this topic, dimethyl phenyl hexadecyl sulfonate(product code 2Φ16S) was synthesized after the sulfonation, alkylation and neutralization process with α-C16 olefin,SO3 and xylene as raw materials in the reaction. After that, the product was characterized by UV, IR and MS structural characterization methods in order to evaluate performance of the 2Φ16S surfactant in its surface activity, interfacial activity, foaming and emulsifying properties. The results show that, it is the target product. The CMC of 2Φ16S is 0.006mol/L, meaning that it has a wonderful surface activity. The 2Φ16 we get has a better performance in 150mg/L water than in the 4th Daqing oil factory’s sewage and distilled water made in the lab. When used in a certain ASP pattern in Daqing crude oil, it will result in the lowest surface tension of 4×10-3mN/m. It is proved to have a good surface activity and the interfacial tension is lower when the sulfonate concentration in the system is lower. The weak base ternary compound system is stable and there is no obvious activity changes and any precipitations in the system in 90 days. The emulsifying property of the product is better in weak base system than that in strong base system. The emulsifying capacity and stability is best when the surfactant concentration is 0.1wt%. And in this condition, the emulsified oil droplets with the particle size of less than 1μm account for more than 90%, they need 15 mins to reach drainage rate of 25%.
