Research On The Relationship Between Environment And Economy In Tianjin

Tianjin’s economy has taken on a good development momentum in recent years, while the environment of Tianjin is deteriorating. To make Tianjin a balanced, sustainable development and ecological livable city, the qualitative and quantitative researches on the present situation and the existing problems of the environment and economic coordinated development in Tianjin are needed. It is significant that Tianjin will become an ecological livable and economic prosperity modernized city which social progress can synchronize with both economic development and environmental protection.The research content is the relationship between the economy and environment in Tianjin. Firstly the theories about the relationship between environment and economy are researched. Then the statistic researches on the economic growth and environmental quality in Tianjin are done. Thirdly the principal components analysis is used to obtain the two comprehensive indices which can reflect the present situation of the economy and environment; then an empirical analysis of the Environmental Kuznets curve theory is made, using the two comprehensive indicators, for describing the development rule of the environment and economy in Tianjin for years; the coordinated development degree is calculated to indicate the harmonious degree of the economy and environment. Finally the Vector Autoregression model which can analyze the impact period, degree and the causal relationship between the economic growth and three industrial wastes is established. According to the results of the study on the economic and environmental coordinated development, the reasonable advices are suggested.The main conclusions are reached as follows. The relationship between the environment and economy in Tianjin is in one part of the reverse "N-type" Kuznets curve. The current relationship between the environment and the economy in Tianjin is at the stage of the moderate imbalanced recession while the environment protection lags behind the economic development. The economic growth of Tianjin is mainly depended on the industrial gas emissions and industrial solid waste production. The industrial gas emissions’ fluctuations have a short-term and negative impact on the economic growth, while the industrial solid waste production’s fluctuations have a positive long-term effect on GDP.The innovation points are:firstly, the establishment of index. The comprehensive indices of the economic growth and environmental quality condition are built respectively, which can reflect the status of the economic growth and the environmental quality in Tianjin more fully and accurately. Secondly, in terms of research methods:the environmental Kuznets curve theory and the degree coordinated development theory on the environment and economy are used to measure whether the economic growth can synchronize with the environment protection. The VAR model is built to study the relationship between the economy and the environment quantitatively. To some extent, all of these results can lay the foundation for the economic and environmental coordinated development in Tianjin.
