Metal bonded diamond wheel has excellent grinding capability, high bearing capacity and long service life, but it is very difficult for traditional dressing methods to achieve high precision truing of the wheel. In order to solve this problem, the EDM(electrical discharge machining)dressing of 600# bronze bonded diamond grinding wheel were analyzed and studied in this paper. The main contents were as follows:(1) The EDM dressing was proposed based on the analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of the existing grinding wheel dressing technology, and the essence and mechanism of EDM dressing of metal bonded diamond grinding wheel are deeply studied;(2) Based on the material composition of metal bonded diamond wheel and the principle of the EDM dressing, the EDM dressing model of 600# metal bonded diamond grinding wheel was constructed. The grinding wheel temperature field distribution of different dressing parameters were obtained through the ANSYS thermal analysis. The simulation results showed that graphitization of abrasive diamond may happen with inappropriate parameters when the heat source passed through the center of abrasive, and the EDM dressing experiments verified the accuracy of simulation model;(3) In order to study the effects of the EDM dressing conditions on the grinding wheel and the EDM dressing mechanism, the EDM dressing of 600# metal bonded diamond grinding wheel experiment scheme and device were design, which proposed suitable dressing parameters for 600# metal bond diamond V shaped grinding wheel. The experiment results showed that the copper electrode had higher shaping speed and higher electrode wear rate than the Cu W70 copper-tungsten electrode, which indicated that Copper electrode was suitable for rough dressing and Cu W70 electrode was suitable for precision dressing. The lower wheel speed and higher electrical parameters leaded to higher dressing speed.(4) The EDM dressing experimental for 600# metal bonded diamond V shaped wheel was carried out and the EDM dressing characteristics of the metal bond diamond grinding wheel were studied by the observation of the surface morphology and energy spectrum of the grinding wheel. The experimental results showed that the minimum tip radius was 27.26 μm and the angle was 61.38° and the geometric accuracy of the grinding wheel was significantly improved compared with before dressing. It was proved that the EDM dressing of metal bond V-shaped grinding wheel was feasible.
